Career

Glenni Scofield attended the public schools in his home country and then completed an apprenticeship in the printing trade. He then continued his education at Hamilton College in Clinton until 1840 . He then taught as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1842, he began to work in this profession in Warren, Pennsylvania. Between 1846 and 1848 he was also a district attorney there. At the same time he embarked on a political career. From 1849 to 1851 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . In the 1850s he joined the Republican Party , which was then founded . Scofield served in the Pennsylvania Senate from 1857 to 1859 . In 1861 he became the presiding judge in his state's 18th judicial district.

In the congressional elections of 1862 Scofield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Covode on March 4, 1863 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1875 . Since 1873 he represented the state-wide elected 26th district. From 1865 to 1867 Scofield was chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business ; between 1869 and 1875 he headed the Naval Committee. During his tenure in Congress, the 13th , 14th and 15th amendments were ratified. Until 1865 his term of office was marked by the events of the civil war . Between 1865 and 1869, the work of Congress was weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial.

In 1874 Scofield renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1878 and 1881 he worked as the Register of the Treasury for the federal government. He was then associate judge at the United States Court of Claims from May 1881 to July 1891 , where he succeeded William H. Hunt . Glenni Scofield died in Warren on August 30, 1891.
