John Covode (born March 17, 1808 in West Fairfield , Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania , †  January 11, 1871 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1863 and again from 1867 to 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Covode attended public schools in his home country. He then worked in agriculture, crafts and the transport business. Finally he got into the coal trade. In the 1850s he became a member of the short-lived Opposition Party . From 1857 he belonged to the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1854 , Covode was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Augustus Drum on March 4, 1855 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1863 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war until 1861 and by the war itself since 1861. In the meantime, Covode chaired the Public Spending Control Committee. In 1860, he also chaired a committee to review possible impeachment proceedings against President James Buchanan . Such an impeachment did not materialize, however. In 1862 he renounced another candidacy.

In the elections of 1866 Covode was re-elected to Congress in the 21st district of his state, where he replaced John Littleton Dawson on March 4, 1867 . After an initially controversial re-election, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 11, 1871. At that time he belonged to the radical faction of his party. Until 1869, the work of Congress was weighed down by tension between Republicans and President Andrew Johnson , which culminated in a narrowly unsuccessful impeachment trial. This process was given sustained support by Covode. From 1867 to 1869 he was chairman of the public real estate committee. During his time in Congress, the 14th Amendment was also ratified.
