Henry Donnel Foster (born December 19, 1808 in Mercer , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  October 16, 1880 in Irwin , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1847 and again between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Foster was a cousin of US Vice President John C. Breckinridge (1821–1875). He enjoyed a good education and graduated from the College of Meadville , among other things . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1829, he began to work in this profession in Greensburg . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1842 congressional election , Foster was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Albert Gallatin Marchand on March 4, 1843 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1847 . These had been shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War since 1845 .

Foster was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1857 and 1858 . In 1858 he sought to return to Congress, but failed; In 1860 he ran for the office of governor of Pennsylvania without success . In 1868 he ran again unsuccessfully for Congress. In the elections of 1870 he was finally elected to the US House of Representatives in the 21st district of his state, where he replaced John Covode on March 4, 1871 and served a term until March 3, 1873. In 1872 he was not re-elected.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Henry Foster practiced again as a lawyer. In 1879 he moved to Irwin, where he died on October 16, 1880.
