James Scott Negley

James Scott Negley (born December 22, 1826 in East Liberty , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , †  August 7, 1901 in Plainfield , New Jersey ) was an American politician and Union general during the Civil War . Between 1869 and 1875 and again from 1885 to 1887 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Negley attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the Western University of Pennsylvania , now the University of Pittsburgh . During the Mexican-American War he served in a volunteer unit from Pennsylvania. After the war he worked in agriculture and horticulture. During the civil war he served first as a brigadier general and from November 1862 as a major general in the Union army . He took part in several battles and was temporarily relieved of his command following a defeat. In January 1865 he retired from military service. Then he worked in the railroad business. He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1868 Negley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded James K. Moorhead on March 4, 1869 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1875 . During this time the 15th amendment was ratified . In 1874 he was not re-elected.

Between 1874 and 1878 and again from 1882 to 1888, Negley was a member of the federal executive committee of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers . In the elections of 1884 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the 22nd district of his state, where he replaced James Herron Hopkins on March 4, 1885 . Since he was not confirmed in 1886, he could only serve one more term in Congress until March 3, 1887. James Negley died in Plainfield on August 7, 1901 and was buried in Pittsburgh .
