James Herron Hopkins

James Herron Hopkins (born November 3, 1832 in Washington , Pennsylvania , †  June 17, 1904 in North Hatley , Québec , Canada ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 and again from 1883 to 1885 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Hopkins attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at Washington College there until 1850 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this profession in Pittsburgh . He was also active in banking, crafts and mining. For several years he served as Vice President of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1872 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional elections of 1874 Hopkins was then elected in the 22nd  constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican James Scott Negley on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877. In the elections of 1882 he moved again for the 22nd district of his state in the House of Representatives, where he replaced Russell Errett on March 4, 1883 , who had become his successor there in 1877. In 1884 he was not re-elected again and could therefore only spend one further term in Congress until March 3, 1885. During this time he headed the Labor Committee.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, James Hopkins practiced as a lawyer in the federal capital Washington. He died on June 17, 1904 in North Hatley, Canada and was buried in Washington DC.
