Washington Townsend

Washington Townsend (born January 20, 1813 in West Chester , Pennsylvania , †  March 18, 1894 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1877 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Washington Townsend first attended a private school and then the West Chester Academy . Between 1828 and 1844 he was employed as a bank clerk. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1844, he began practicing this profession in West Chester. In 1848 he was a district attorney there. From 1849 to 1857 he worked as a cashier at the Bank of Chester County . Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party . In June 1852 he took part as a delegate at their federal party conference in Baltimore . After the dissolution of the Whigs, he joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . In May 1860 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a candidate for president.

In the congressional elections of 1868 Townsend was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Martin Broomall on March 4, 1869 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1877 . From 1875 he represented the sixth district of his state there as the successor to James Soloman Biery . Townsend chaired the State Property Management Committee between 1873 and 1875. In 1876 he renounced another congressional candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he initially worked as a lawyer again. From 1879 he was President of the Bank of Chester County . Washington Townsend died on March 18, 1894 in West Chester.
