William Ward

William Ward (born January 1, 1837 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  February 27, 1895 in Chester , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Ward attended Girard College in Philadelphia. He then completed an apprenticeship in printing with the Delaware County Republican newspaper . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1859, he began to work in Chester in this profession. He also worked in real estate and banking. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He became a member of the city council of Chester and at times also legal representative of that city.

In the congressional election of 1876 Ward was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Washington Townsend on March 4, 1877 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Ward resumed his previous activities. He died on February 27, 1895 in Chester, where he was also buried.
