James Bowen Everhart

James Bowen Everhart (born July 26, 1821 in West Chester , Pennsylvania , †  August 23, 1888 there ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Everhart was the son of Congressman William Everhart (1785–1868). He attended Bolmar's Academy in West Chester and then Princeton College until 1842 . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and in Philadelphia , he was admitted to the bar in 1845. He then studied abroad for two years, including at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin and at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland . Upon his return, he began practicing law in West Chester. During the Civil War , he served in the Pennsylvania State Militia, which was part of the Union Army . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1876 and 1882 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .

In the congressional election of 1882 Everhart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William Ward on March 4, 1883 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 . In 1886 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, James Everhart worked again as a lawyer. He died in West Chester on August 23, 1888.
