Charles Grandison Williams (born October 18, 1829 in Royalton , Niagara County , New York , †  March 30, 1892 in Watertown , South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1883 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good primary education, Charles Williams studied law in Rochester . In 1856 he moved to Wisconsin and settled in Janesville . There he worked as a lawyer. In his new home, Williams began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1869 and 1872 he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . At times he was president of this chamber.

In the 1872 congressional election , Williams was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Wisconsin . There he took over from Alexander Mitchell on March 4, 1873 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . From 1881 to 1883 he was chairman of the foreign affairs committee. In the elections of 1882 Charles William was defeated by the Democrat John Winans . In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on March 30, 1892 in Watertown, South Dakota and was buried in Janesville.
