Robert John Cornell OPraem (born December 16, 1919 in Gladstone , Delta County , Michigan , † May 10, 2009 in De Pere , Wisconsin ) was an American politician and Roman Catholic priest.

Life

Cornell was born in Gladstone, Michigan in 1919. At the age of eight, he and his family moved to Green Bay , Wisconsin. He attended St. Norbert College in DePere and received his Bachelor of Arts there in 1941 . His Master of Arts and Ph.D. he got in 1947 and 1957 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC

Cornell, who had joined the Premonstratensian Order in 1938 , was ordained a priest on June 17, 1944 and worked as a teacher at various church schools in Philadelphia . From 1947 to 1974 Cornell was Professor of History and Political Science at St. Norbert College . Since the late 1960s, Cornell was also politically active in the Democratic Party , where he held various internal party offices. Among other things, he was Chairman of the Democrats in the eighth congressional electoral district from 1969 to 1974 .

After two unsuccessful attempts in 1970 and 1972, Cornell was elected to the United States Congress in 1974 and re-elected in 1976, representing the state of Wisconsin from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1979 in the US House of Representatives . In the 1978 elections, however, he was unable to defend his seat. In 1980 he tried to regain his seat, but withdrew from the election campaign on May 6 and ended his political career because of a papal decree that urged all priests to renounce political office. Cornell devoted himself again to his teaching activities, since 1979 he was again a professor at St. Norbert College .

Cornell was one of the only two Roman Catholic priests in Congress alongside Robert Drinan . Drinan, who represented Massachusetts in Washington from 1971 to 1981 , often served as a role model during his time as a member of parliament .
