Morgan Lewis Martin
Morgan Lewis Martin (born March 31, 1805 in Martinsburg , Lewis County , New York , † December 10, 1887 in Green Bay , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented the Wisconsin Territory as a delegate to the US House of Representatives .
Career
Morgan Lewis attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1824 the Hamilton College in Clinton . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Detroit in his new profession. In 1827 he moved to Green Bay in what was then the Michigan Territory . There he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1831 and 1835 he was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives. After the founding of the Wisconsin Territory, he was also a member of its territorial parliament from 1838 to 1844. In 1842 and 1843 he served as its president.
In the congressional election of 1844 , he was elected as a delegate from his territory to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over from Henry Dodge on March 4, 1845 . Until March 3, 1847 he was able to represent his territory for one legislative period in Congress . During this time, the Mexican-American War began .
In 1847 and 1848 Martin served as president of the second constituent assembly of the future state of Wisconsin. In 1855 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly ; from 1858 to 1859 he was a member of the State Senate . During the civil war he was a major paymaster in the army of the Union . Between 1866 and 1869 Martin worked as an Indian agent. In 1866 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress. Then he worked again as a lawyer. In 1875 he was elected District Judge for Brown County . He held this office until his death on December 10, 1887 in Green Bay.
Morgan Martin was a cousin of James Duane Doty (1799-1865), who between 1837 and 1853 represented the state of Wisconsin twice in Congress.
