Allen R. Bushnell

Allen Ralph Bushnell (born July 18, 1833 in Hartford , Trumbull County , Ohio , †  March 29, 1909 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Allen Bushnell attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Oberlin Academy and the Hiram Academy . In 1854 he moved to Platteville , Wisconsin. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1857, he began to work in Platteville in his new profession. From 1860 to 1861 he was a district attorney in Grant County . He resigned from this office in 1861 to take part in the civil war . He made it up to captain in the Union Army by 1864 .

In 1864 Bushnell moved to Lancaster . In the same year he was again a district attorney in Grant County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1872 he became a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly ; in 1875 he was elected the first mayor of the City of Lancaster. Between 1886 and 1890, Bushnell was a federal attorney for western Wisconsin. Since 1891 he lived in Madison.

In the 1890 congressional election , Bushnell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Robert M. La Follette on March 4, 1891 . Since he refused to run again in 1892, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Bushnell withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died in Madison on March 29, 1909 and was buried in Lancaster.
