David Ross "Dave" Obey (born October 3, 1938 in Okmulgee , Oklahoma ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1969 to 2011 , where he last represented the seventh congressional electoral district of the state of Wisconsin .

Career

Dave Obey attended Wausau High School until 1956 and then studied until 1962 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . He then worked as a real estate agent in the real estate industry.

Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1963 and 1969 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . After the resignation of Congressman Melvin R. Laird , he was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the by-election due for the seventh seat of Wisconsin , where he took up his new mandate on April 1, 1969. After 20 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2011 . There he was, among other things, chairman of the budget committee. He was considered one of the most liberal politicians in the House of Representatives and sees himself in the progressive tradition of Robert La Follette .

During Obey's time as a congressman, the end of the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 as well as the Iraq war fell . In 2010 he renounced another candidacy. His seat went to Republican Sean Duffy in the November election .
