Joseph Humphrey Sloss

Joseph Humphrey Sloss (born October 12, 1826 in Somerville , Morgan County , Alabama , † January 27, 1911 in Memphis , Shelby County , Tennessee ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Joseph Humphrey Sloss completed his preparatory studies. He then studied law , was admitted to the bar and then started in St. Louis ( Missouri to practice) on. He retired in 1849 after Edwardsville ( Illinois ), where he continued his work as a lawyer. Sloss also pursued a political career. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1858 and 1859 . He then moved to Alabama. There he served in the Confederate Army after the outbreak of the American Civil War . After the war he served as the mayor of Tuscumbia, Alabama. Sloss was elected to the 42nd US Congress and re - elected to the subsequent 43rd US Congress . In his candidacy for the 44th US Congress in 1874 , however, he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1875. Sloss was named US Marshal for the Northern District of Alabama on February 10, 1877 . He held this office until September 6, 1882. He then served as a clerk in the federal court of Huntsville, Alabama. He also went to agricultural activities near Huntsville. He later moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he died in 1911. His body was then transferred to Huntsville, where he was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery .
