Benjamin Sterling Turner (born March 17, 1825 near Weldon , Halifax County , North Carolina , † March 21, 1894 in Selma , Dallas County , Alabama ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Benjamin Sterling Turner was born a slave so he was not given any education in his childhood. He moved to Alabama in 1830, where he secretly received adequate training. Then he went about trading activities. Turner was elected Dallas County's tax collector in 1867. Two years later he was elected to the Selma City Council.

Turner also pursued a political career. He was elected to the 42nd US Congress . In his re-election attempt in the subsequent 43rd US Congress , however, he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. Then in 1880 he attended the Republican National Convention as a delegate . He also worked in agriculture in Alabama . He died in Selma, Alabama, in 1894 and was buried there in Live Oak Cemetery .
