James Thomas Heflin

James Thomas Heflin (born April 9, 1869 in Louina , Randolph County , Alabama , † April 22, 1951 in La Fayette , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the nephew of Congressman Robert Stell Heflin and the uncle of US Senator Howell Heflin .

Career

James Thomas Heflin attended a community school in Randolph County. Then he went to Southern University in Greensboro and the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College in Auburn . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1893 and then began practicing at La Fayette.

Heflin was Mayor of La Fayette between 1893 and 1894. He was then a register at the Chancery from 1894 until his resignation in 1896 . He was then a member of the Alabama House of Representatives between 1896 and 1900 . In 1901 he took part as a delegate to the Alabama Constituent Assembly . He was then Secretary of State from 1902 until his resignation in 1904 .

Heflin was elected to the 58th US Congress to fill the vacancy created by the death of Charles Winston Thompson . He was re-elected to the eight subsequent US Congresses . Heflin served in the US House of Representatives from May 19, 1904 until his resignation on November 1, 1920 to run for the US Senate. During his time in the US House of Representatives, he chaired the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions ( 62nd Congress ).

Heflin was elected to the US Senate on November 2, 1920 to fill the vacancy created by the death of John H. Bankhead (1842-1920). His term of office would have ended on March 3, 1925. Heflin was re-elected in 1924, but suffered a defeat on his second attempt at re-election, as well as in several other elections for the US Congress and US Senate. He served in the US Senate from November 3, 1920 to March 3, 1931.

He then worked as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General in Alabama between 1936 and 1937 . He was also from 1935 to 1936 and again from 1939 to 1942 Special Representative of the Federal Housing Administration . He then retired.
