George R. Swift

George Robinson Swift (* 19th December 1887 in Baldwin County , Alabama ; † 10. September 1972 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

George Swift first attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University Military School in Mobile and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa . He then worked in the lumber industry. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1931 to 1935 and a member of the Alabama Senate from 1935 to 1939 and 1947 to 1951 . He was also responsible for the state highways from 1943 to 1946 . In 1946 he was appointed to the US Senate to take over the mandate vacated by the death of John H. Bankhead . Swift represented Alabama in the US Senate from June 15, 1946 to November 5, 1946, he did not run for the election to fill the Senate seat. Then he worked again in the lumber industry.

Swift died in New Orleans on September 10, 1972 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore .
