Atmore is a city in Escambia County in the US state of Alabama . In 2012 around 10,100 people lived here.
geography
Atmore is located in southern Alabama in the southeastern United States. The southern city limits also form the border with Florida , the distance to the Gulf of Mexico in the south is about 80 kilometers. The urban area is divided into several parts, of which, in addition to the core urban area, there is another one east of the city around the airport and four more north of the city around the connection to Interstate 65 .
Nearby locations include Walnut Hill (12 km south), Flomaton (18 km east), Century (18 km east), and Bay Minette (25 km southwest). The next larger city, with around 195,000 inhabitants, is Mobile, which is just under 50 kilometers south-west .
history
Atmore was founded in 1866 as a station on the Mobile and Great Northern Railroad named Williams Station . It developed slowly until 1886, but then grew with the construction of a sawmill. It was named in 1897 after CP Atmore, a senior employee of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad . The lumber and turpentine industries became the main branch of the local economy.
The city has had a telephone connection since 1908, a water connection since 1911 and a continuous electricity connection since 1914. The first hospital was built in 1915. In addition to industry , the city is also important as a local agricultural center.
traffic
US Highway 31 runs from west to east of the city, and Alabama State Route 21 from north to south , which merges into Florida State Road 97 south of the city . About 4 kilometers northwest of the city runs Interstate 65 , which runs over a length of 1,436 kilometers from Alabama to Indiana . North of the city are four smaller exclaves around the connection to Interstate 65.
In a further exclave 2 kilometers east of the city area is the Atmore Municipal Airport , via which around 3870 aircraft movements are carried out annually.

The 2000 census showed a population of 7676. The population density was about 356 people per square kilometer. 49.5% of the population were white, 46.3% black, 2.4% American Indian, 0.5% Asian and 0.1% Pacific islander. 0.4% were of a different ethnicity , 0.9% had two or more ethnicities, and 0.7% were Hispanics or Latin Americans of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were about 79 men. The average age was 37 years.
By the 2010 census , the population had increased by almost 33% to 10,194.
