William Kelly (politician, 1786)

William Kelly (born September 22, 1786 , †  August 24, 1834 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician ( Democratic Republican Party ) who represented the state of Alabama in the US Senate .

Originally from South Carolina , Kelly received a comprehensive education, then studied law , was admitted to the bar, and then moved to Tennessee , where he practiced as a lawyer and was also appointed a judge . From 1818 he lived in Alabama, where he opened a law firm in Huntsville .

After the resignation of US Senator John Williams Walker , William Kelly took his place in Congress on December 12, 1822 . In his party he was one of the supporters of the future US President Andrew Jackson . Kelly's tenure ended on March 3, 1825. In the same year he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from Alabama ; there was another term of office in 1827. In 1830 he moved to Louisiana, where he died four years later.
