James Abercrombie (politician)

James Abercrombie (born February 18, 1792 in Hancock County , Georgia , † July 2, 1861 in Pensacola , Escambia County , Florida ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Whig Party ).

Career

James Abercrombie attended community school. He moved to Alabama around 1812, where he settled first in Monroe (now Dallas ) County and then in 1819 in Montgomery County . During the British-American War , he served as a corporal in Major F. Freeman's squadron of the Georgia Cavalry . He studied law . Abercrombie was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives between 1820 and 1822, between 1824 and 1825, and again between 1838 and 1839 . He was also a member of the Alabama Senate between 1825 and 1833 and again between 1847 and 1850 . During this time he was a captain in the Alabama Militia and commanded the cavalry in 1825 when greeting General Lafayette . He also moved to Russell County in 1834 . Abercrombie was elected to the 32nd US Congress , where he served from March 4, 1851 to March 3, 1855. In 1854 he decided against running for the US Congress again . Then he moved to Florida in 1856, where he worked as a state brick supplier.

James Abercrombie died in Pensacola, Florida in 1861, and his body was transferred to Columbus, Georgia, where he was buried in Linwood Cemetery .
