John Mason Martin

John Mason Martin (born January 20, 1837 in Athens , Limestone County , Alabama , † June 16, 1898 in Bowling Green , Warren County , Kentucky ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the son of Governor Joshua L. Martin .

Career

John Mason Martin attended community school, Green Springs, Alabama high school, and the University of Alabama , Tuscaloosa . He graduated from Center College in Danville, Kentucky in 1856 . Martin studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1858 and then began to practice in Tuscaloosa. He was a member of the Alabama Senate between 1871 and 1876 . During this time he held the post of President pro Tempore between 1873 and 1876 . He also served as a professor of equity jurisprudence at the University of Alabama between 1875 and 1886 . He was elected to the 49th US Congress . In his re-election attempt in the 50th US Congress , however, he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1887. After his tenure, he returned to his practice as a lawyer in Birmingham, Alabama.

He died in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1898, and his body was transferred to Tuscaloosa, where he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery .
