Jeremiah Norman Williams (born May 29, 1829 near Louisville , Barbour County , Alabama , † May 8, 1915 in Clayton , Barbour County, Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Jeremiah Norman Williams attended private preparatory schools in Barbour County and then graduated from the University of South Carolina at Columbia in 1852 . He studied law in Montgomery and Tuskegee . He was admitted to the bar in 1855 and then began practicing in Clayton, Alabama. After the outbreak of the American Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army , was Captain of the Clayton Guards and later a major in the 1st Regiment , Alabama Infantry .

Williams also had a political career. He became a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1872 , but was not allowed to take his seat. Then he was elected to the 44th Congress and re-elected to the subsequent 45th Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1879. During this time he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the Postal Ministry (45th Congress).

He later worked as a chancellor of the 3rd Division between 1893 and 1899 . He then went back to his practice as a lawyer in Clayton. He also took part in the Alabama Constituent Assembly in 1901 . He died in Clayton, Alabama in 1915 and was buried in the city cemetery.
