Charles Pelham

Charles Pelham (born March 12, 1835 in Person County , North Carolina , † January 18, 1908 in Poulan , Worth County , Georgia ) was an American lawyer , judge and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Charles Pelham moved to Alabama with his parents in 1838 . He attended community school there. He then studied law , was admitted to the bar and then began practicing in Talladega, Alabama in 1858 . Pelham joined the Confederate Army in 1862 , where he served as first lieutenant in C Company , 51st Regiment , Alabama Infantry . After the end of the American Civil War he served as a judge in the 10th Judicial District of Alabama between 1868 and 1873. He also pursued a political career. Pelham was elected to the 43rd US Congress and served there from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. He decided against running for the 44th US Congress in 1874 , stayed after the end of his term in Washington, DC and resumed work as a lawyer. He was later appointed a clerk in the Federal Ministry of Finance . Pelham moved to Poulan, Georgia in 1907, where he died a year later. He was buried there in the Presbyterian Cemetery .

His daughter, Rosa, was married to Samuel Taylor Suit (1830-1888), a Maryland politician and landowner .
