James Ferguson Dowdell
James Ferguson Dowdell (born November 26, 1818 in Monticello , Jasper County , Georgia , † September 6, 1871 in Auburn , Alabama ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ) and officer in the Confederate Army .
Career
James Dowdell completed his preparatory studies and graduated in 1840 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland ( Virginia ). He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1841, and then began practicing in Greenville, Georgia. He then moved to Chambers County , Alabama, in 1846 , where he did some farming . Dowdell also had a political career. He ran unsuccessfully in 1849 and 1851 for a seat in the US House of Representatives . Dowdell was elected to the 33rd US Congress and re - elected to the two subsequent conventions . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1859. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army. He held the rank of colonel in the 37th Regiment , Alabama Volunteer Infantry under General Price from 1862 until the end of the war. After the war he was President of East Alabama College in Auburn from 1868 to 1870 .
