Thomas H. Herndon

Thomas Hord Herndon (born July 1, 1828 in Erie , Greene County (now Hale County ), Alabama , † March 28, 1883 in Mobile , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Thomas Hord Herndon attended a private school. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1847 . Then he attended Harvard University law school in 1848 . He was admitted to the bar in 1849 and then began practicing in Eutaw, Alabama. He moved to Mobile, Alabama, in 1853, where he continued to work as a lawyer.

Herndon also had a political career. He was editor for the Eutaw Democrats in 1850. Then he served in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1857 and 1858 . He then served as a curator at the University of Alabama in 1858 and 1859. Herndon moved back to Greene County in 1859. He attended the State Secession Convention in 1861 .

After the outbreak of the American Civil War , he joined the Confederate Army . There he was promoted several times and most recently held the rank of Colonel in the 36th Regiment , Alabama Infantry . He was wounded twice while on duty. After the war he moved back to Mobile, where he resumed his practice as a lawyer.

Herndon ran unsuccessfully for governor of Alabama in 1872 . He then attended the Alabama Constituent Assembly on September 6, 1875 . Then he returned to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1876 and 1877. Herndon was elected to the 46th US Congress and re - elected to the two subsequent US Congresses . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1879 until his death in 1883 in Mobile, Alabama, before the 48th US Congress could meet. Herndon was buried in Magnolia Cemetery .
