Albert Lee Smith, Jr. (born August 31, 1931 in Birmingham , Jefferson County , Alabama , † August 12, 1997 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Albert L. Smith, Jr. graduated from Ramsay High School in Birmingham in 1949 and from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Sciences in 1954 . He then served in the US Navy between 1954 and 1956 . Then he worked as an insurance agent. Smith also had a political career. He attended the Republican National Conventions as a delegate in 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1984 . During this time he ran in 1978 unsuccessfully for a seat in the 96th US Congress , but he was then elected to the 97th US Congress . When he ran for the 98th US Congress in 1982 , he suffered a defeat. He served in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1981 to January 3, 1983. The following year he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . He was then a member of the Federal Council on the Aging in Washington, DC in 1985. Smith died in Birmingham in 1997 and was buried there in Elmwood Cemetery .
