Sampson Willis Harris

Sampson Willis Harris (born February 23, 1809 in Elbert County , Georgia , † April 1, 1857 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Sampson Willis Harris was homeschooled by his mother and then graduated from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1828 . He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1830 and then started practicing in Athens. Harris also had a political career. He served in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1834 and 1835 . Then he moved in 1838 to Wetumpka ( Alabama ). He was elected solicitor for the 8th judicial district in 1841 . He then served in the Alabama Senate in 1844 and 1845 . He was elected to the 30th US Congress and re - elected to the four subsequent US Congresses . Harris decided against running for the 35th US Congress . He served in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1857. Harris died in Washington, DC in 1857, and his body was then transferred to Athens, where he was buried in Oconee Cemetery .
