Thomas S. Plowman

Thomas Scales Plowman (born June 8, 1843 in Talladega , Talladega County , Alabama , † July 26, 1919 ibid) was an American soldier, banker and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Private life

Thomas Scales Plowman attended community school.

During the American Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army in May 1862 and served there in Company F, 51st Alabama Cavalry . After the war he went to agricultural and commercial activities in Talladega. He was also President of the First National Bank of Talladega and the first President of Bankhead Highway for several years .

Political career

Plowman chose to pursue a political career when he successfully ran for mayor of Talladega in 1872, a post he held three terms. He took part in 1888 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . He was later elected to the 55th US Congress , where he was only active from March 4, 1897 to February 9, 1898, since the election was successfully contested by the Republican William F. Aldrich . Plowman was a member and chairman of the Talladega County Jury Commission in 1910 and 1911 . He was also a member of the Alabama Senate in 1912 .

Plowman died in Talladega in 1919 and was buried there in Oak Hill Cemetery .
