Peterson Bryant "Pete" Jarman (born October 31, 1892 in Greensboro , Alabama , † February 17, 1955 in Washington, DC ) was an American officer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Life

Pete Jarman attended a public school, Normal College in Livingston and Southern University in Greensboro. He then graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1913 and then attended the University of Montpellier in France in 1919 . In between, he worked as a clerk at the probate court in Sumter County between 1913 and 1917 . He also served overseas in World War I , first as a second and later as a first lieutenant in the 327th Infantry . On his return to the United States, he served in the Alabama National Guard , where he served as an inspector general with the rank of major from 1922 to 1924 . He was then between 1924 and 1940 Division Inspector of the 31st Infantry Division , where he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . In addition, he worked as a deputy bank auditor between 1919 and 1930.

Jarman also had a political career. He was a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee of Alabama between 1927 and 1930 . The following year he became Secretary of State in the state government of Alabama and held that position until 1934. He then served in 1935 and 1936 as assistant auditor. Jarman was elected to the 75th Congress and five subsequent conventions . In his candidacy for the 81st Congress in 1948 , however, he suffered a defeat. He was a member of the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1937 to January 3, 1949. During this time he chaired the Committee on Memorials (75th US Congress). Jarman was appointed ambassador to Australia on June 8, 1949 by US President Harry S. Truman . He held this position as the successor to Myron M. Cowen until July 31, 1953. Jarman died in Washington in 1955 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
