Myron M. Cowen

Myron Melvin Cowen (born January 25, 1898 in Logan , Iowa , † November 1, 1965 in Washington, DC ) was an American diplomat who, among other things, was ambassador to Australia between 1948 and 1949 and ambassador to the Philippines from 1949 to 1951 and was ambassador to Belgium between 1952 and 1953 .

Life

Cowen completed after school between 1914 and 1915 an undergraduate degree at Wofford College in Spartanburg and then a law degree at Drake University in Des Moines , which he graduated in 1918. He then settled as a lawyer in Des Moines and was later from 1926 to 1933 an employee (commissioner) at the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC , where he subsequently worked as a lawyer between 1935 and 1948.

During a break in the Senate session, he was appointed Ambassador to Australia on July 1, 1948 , and took office on August 20, 1948 as the successor to Robert Butler . After his appointment was withdrawn on March 2, 1949 after treatment in the US Senate , he was recalled on March 17, 1949. Thereupon Pete Jarman became his successor on September 7, 1949.

Immediately after his appeal was withdrawn, Cowen was appointed Ambassador to the Philippines on March 2, 1949, succeeding Emmet O'Neal , and handed over his credentials to the President of the Philippines Elpidio Quirino on May 23, 1949 . He held the post of ambassador to the Philippines until October 14, 1951, whereupon Raymond A. Spruance succeeded him on February 7, 1952. Most recently, he succeeded Robert Daniel Murphy as ambassador to Belgium on June 11, 1952, and remained in this position until June 8, 1953. His successor there was Frederick M. Alger, Jr. on July 22, 1953 .

After retiring from the diplomatic service, he worked again as a lawyer in Washington, DC until his death.
