James La Fayette Cottrell (born August 25, 1808 in King William , King William County , Virginia , † September 7, 1885 in Cedar Keys , Florida ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

James Cottrell completed his preparatory studies. He studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1830, and then began practicing in Hayneville, Alabama. Cottrell served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1834, 1836, and 1837 . He then sat in the Alabama Senate from 1838 to 1841 , serving as President of the Chamber in 1840. Cottrell was elected to the 29th US Congress to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William Lowndes Yancey . It belonged to the United States House of Representativesfrom December 7, 1846 to March 3, 1847. Then he moved to Florida in 1854. There he was state senator between 1865 and 1885 . He was also made a tax collector at Cedar Keys, a position he held until his death in 1885. He was buried in the city cemetery in Old Town, Florida.
