James D. Martin (January 1965)

James Douglas Martin (born September 1, 1918 in Tarrant , Jefferson County , Alabama - † October 30, 2017 in Gadsden , Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

James Martin attended Jefferson County public schools and the Birmingham School of Law . He started working in the petroleum industry in 1937 . He then joined the US Army in July 1941 and, after the United States entered World War II , commanded a gun battery in Europe . In addition, he served as an intelligence officer in the occupation army. He retired in March 1946 with the rank of major from the US Army. After returning to the United States, he returned to work in the oil industry.

Martin also pursued a political career. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate in 1962 . Then he was elected to the 89th US Congress . He decided against running for the 90th US Congress in 1966 , but ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Alabama. Martin served in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1967. He ran unsuccessfully for a Republican nomination for the US Senate in 1972 and in 1978 for the remainder of James Browning Allen’s term in the US Senate. Then he resumed his activity in the petroleum industry. He also held the position of commissioner in the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and was its president since 1987.
