Abraham Lord Smith

Abraham Herr Smith (born March 7, 1815 in Millersville , Lancaster County , Pennsylvania , †  February 16, 1894 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1885 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Smith attended Professor Beck's Academy in Lititz and then until 1840 Dickinson College in Carlisle . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1842, he began to work in Lancaster in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1843 and 1844 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; in 1845 he was a member of the State Senate . He later became a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1872 Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Oliver James Dickey on March 4, 1873 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1885 . Between 1881 and 1883 he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage . In 1884 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Abraham Smith practiced law again. He died in Lancaster on February 16, 1894.
