Oliver James Dickey (born April 6, 1823 in Old Brighton , Beaver County , Pennsylvania , †  April 21, 1876 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1873 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Oliver Dickey was the son of Congressman John Dickey (1794-1853). He attended preparatory schools, Beaver Academy and then Dickinson College in Carlisle . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1844, he began to work in Lancaster in this profession. Between 1856 and 1859 he was a district attorney in Lancaster County . During the Civil War he was a lieutenant colonel in a Pennsylvania volunteer unit that was part of the Union Army . Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

After the death of MP Thaddeus Stevens , Dickey was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the ninth seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on December 7, 1868. Since he was also elected for the following two legislative terms, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1873 . In 1872 he renounced another candidacy.

Oliver Dickey took part in 1873 as a delegate to a constitutional convention in his home state in Harrisburg . Otherwise he practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Lancaster on April 22, 1876.
