Hiram Lawton Richmond
Hiram Lawton Richmond (born May 17, 1810 in Chautauqua , Chautauqua County , New York , † February 19, 1885 in Meadville , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Hiram Richmond was first taught by a private tutor and then attended the public schools in his home country. He studied medicine with his father for two years. In 1834 and 1835 he attended Allegheny College ; but he did not graduate there. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1838, he began to work in Meadville in this profession. Politically, he was a staunch supporter of the Whig Party . After its dissolution in the 1850s, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 .
In the congressional election of 1872 , Richmond was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Samuel Griffith on March 4, 1873 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1874, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Hiram Richmond returned to practice as a lawyer. For many years he was a board member of Allegheny College . He died on February 19, 1885 in Meadville, where he was also buried.
