Samuel Griffith (politician)
Samuel Griffith (born February 14, 1816 in Merthyr Tydfil , Wales , † October 1, 1893 in Mercer , Pennsylvania ) was a Welsh- American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
It is not known when exactly Samuel Griffith emigrated to the United States. He was first taught by a private tutor and then graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1846, he began to work in Mercer in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the congressional elections of 1870 Griffith was elected in the 20th constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Republican Calvin Willard Gilfillan on March 4, 1871 . Since he was not confirmed in 1872, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Griffith practiced again as a lawyer in Mercer, where he died on October 1, 1893.
