Calvin Willard Gilfillan (born February 20, 1832 in East Brook , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  December 2, 1901 in Franklin , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now Lawrence County , Calvin Gilfillan attended public schools in his homeland and then Westminster College in New Wilmington . He then served two terms as a school councilor in Mercer County. In 1859 he was also an administrator for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began to work in this profession in Mercer . Between 1861 and 1865 he served as the district attorney in Mercer County. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 Gilfillan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Solomon Newton Pettis on March 4, 1869 . Since he was not confirmed in 1870, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1871 . During this time the 15th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Calvin Gilfillan practiced as a lawyer until 1873; then he worked in the banking industry. In June 1872 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , at which President Ulysses S. Grant was nominated for re-election. He died on December 2, 1901 in Franklin, where he was also buried.
