Solomon Newton Pettis

Solomon Newton Pettis (born October 10, 1827 in Lenox , Ohio , †  September 18, 1900 in Meadville , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1868 and 1869 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Solomon Pettis attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1848, he began to work in Meadville in this profession. He was an associate judge in the Colorado Territory in 1861 and 1862 . He then returned to Meadville to continue his legal practice. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

After the death of Member of Parliament Darwin Abel Finney , Pettis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 20th seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on December 7, 1868. Since he was not confirmed in the regular congressional elections of 1868 , he could only end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1869 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Pettis practiced again as a lawyer in Meadville. Between June and October 1879 he was the American envoy to Bolivia . He then returned to Meadville, where he worked as a lawyer until his death on September 18, 1900. He was also buried there.
