Robert Anthony Hatcher (born February 24, 1819 in Buckingham County , Virginia , †  December 4, 1886 in Charleston , Missouri ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 he represented the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Hatcher attended private schools in Lynchburg . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession from 1847 in New Madrid (Missouri). For several years he also worked as a public prosecutor. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives in 1850 and 1851 . During the Civil War he served as a major in the Confederation Army .

In 1864 and 1865, Hatcher served in the House of Representatives for the Confederate Congress . After the war he continued his political and legal career. In the congressional election of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Missouri , where he succeeded Harrison E. Havens on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . From 1877 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with public expenditure ( Committee on Public Expenditures ).

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Robert Hatcher practiced law again. He died on December 4, 1886 in Charleston, where he was also buried.
