Jacob Davis , born Jacob Youphes , Latvian Jākobs Jufess (* 1834 in Riga , † 1908 in San Francisco ) was a Latvian - American tailor .

Life

Jacob Davis was born into a Jewish family in Riga (then part of the Russian Empire ) in 1834 . He emigrated to the San Francisco area around 1850 . There he traveled around to make a living. In 1870 he settled in Reno , where he became a tailor. He also made accessories for cowboys , e.g. B. Tents and horse blankets . The material for this was called duck , a tough type of cotton that was reinforced with copper rivets .

He was asked to make cheap, sturdy trousers for a plump man who kept popping out of his trousers. These pants were ultimately reinforced with rivets in the same way. In 1871, this was his standard practice for reinforcing pants, which was quickly adopted by competition . Jacob Davis then contacted Levi Strauss to apply for a patent because he could not afford the $ 68 cost himself. Levi Strauss was his fabric supplier for duck and denim . The patent for the jeans was granted in 1873. In contrast to Jacob Davis, Levi Strauss became famous with it.

Upon request, Jacob Davis began working for the Levi Strauss Company to coordinate the overseas production of the jeans. He did so until his death in 1908, the same year the jeans patent expired.

His grandson Ben Davis founded the pants brand Ben Davis in 1935 .
