Carl Gmelin (* 1863 in Tübingen ; † 1941 ; also Karl Gmelin ) was a doctor.

Life

Gmelin was born as the fifth child of the court actuary and chief magistrate Otto Gmelin. Born in Swabia, Gmelin studied medicine at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, in Erlangen and Berlin. After completing his studies and doctorate, he first went on a study trip to Vienna before becoming an assistant to a general practitioner in Stuttgart and setting up his own business in 1889. In 1892 he went on a holiday trip to Amrum, where he met the Hamburg factory owner's daughter and teacher Alice Menendinck, whom he married in 1893. In 1894 he had to give up his practice in Stuttgart for health reasons and worked for one summer on Amrum as a doctor, administrator and entertainment director in the Bodelschwingh hospice. In 1898 he founded the North Sea Sanatorium Haus Tübingen in Wyk auf Föhr in the Südstrand district . The healing methods in the North Sea sanatorium were based on the natural healing powers of water, sun and air. Carl Häberlin was involved in setting up the bioclimatic research institute. The sanatorium was built by the Art Nouveau architect August Endell , and a spacious park was created as a windbreak and recreational facility for the sanatorium guests - the so-called North Sea Park. Later a large promenade was built, and Gmelin, and later his successors, acquired further land around the sanatorium, so that almost the entire area of the south beach belonged to the sanatorium. In 1909 Gmelin had a considerable building erected for his new North Sea pedagogy .

The town of Wyk auf Föhr has the main street that connects the old town with the south beach, according to Dr. Named Carl Gmelin. It leads past the North Sea Park and the North Sea Sanatorium.
