Abraham J. Multer

Abraham Jacob Multer (born December 24, 1900 in New York City , † November 4, 1986 in West Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1947 and 1967 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Jacob Multer was born and raised in New York City in the early 20th century. During this time he attended public schools on Coney Island , the Boys' School in Brooklyn and the evening classes at the City College of New York . He then went to Brooklyn Law School , where he made his Bachelor of Laws in 1921 and his Master of Laws in 1922 . He was admitted to the bar in 1923 and then began practicing in New York City. Multer was from 1936 as Special Assistant Attorney General at the New York State Conventions and in 1960 and 1964 at the Democratic National Conventions . Between 1943 and 1945 he served in the United States Coast Guard . He was a special counsel to the Mayor of New York City in 1947 .

Politically, he belongs to the Democratic Party . He was elected in a by-election on November 4, 1947 in the 14th  constituency of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Leo F. Rayfiel . He was elected to the 81st Congress in 1948 and to the 82nd Congress in 1950 . In the 1952 congressional elections , he ran for the US House of Representatives in the 13th constituency of New York. After a successful election, he took over from Donald L. O'Toole on January 4, 1953 . He was re-elected six times in a row, but resigned from his seat on December 31, 1967 during his last term. During this time he made his Doctor of Laws at Yeshiva University in 1963 .

On November 7, 1967, he was elected judge on the New York Supreme Court - a position he held from January 1, 1968 to January 1, 1977. Multer then held the post of Special Referee at the Brooklyn Appellate Division between 1979 and 1984 . He lived in Brooklyn but then moved to West Hartford, where he died on November 4, 1986. His body was then interred in the Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale .
