Peter Joseph Wagner
Peter Joseph Wagner (born August 14, 1795 in Palatine , New York , † September 13, 1884 in Fort Plain , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Peter Joseph Wagner was born about two weeks after the signing of the Greenville Treaty in Wagner's Hollow in the town of Palatine, Montgomery County , and spent the early years there. The family then moved to Fort Plain in 1805. There he completed his preliminary studies. He attended Fairfield Academy in 1810 and 1811 . In 1816 he graduated from Union College in Schenectady . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in September 1819 and then began practicing at Fort Plain. In addition, he worked in agriculture and pursued banking transactions.
In 1834 he ran unsuccessfully for the 24th Congress . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional elections of 1838 for the 26th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Edwards on March 4, 1839 . He retired from the after March 3, 1841 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the US War Department .
After his time in Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer at Fort Plain until May 1873 when he retired. He died there on September 13, 1884 and was buried in the cemetery of the same name.
