Carlo Gaetano Stampa (born November 1, 1667 in Milan ; † December 23, 1742 there ) was Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Early years

Stampa, from a patrician family in Milan , was sent to Rome at the age of twelve to study philosophy and theology in the local seminary . He then studied law in Pavia until 1698 . In 1703 he became the valet of Pope Clement XI. and two years later assistant at the Court of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . After three years as a vice delegate in Romagna , he became governor of Spoleto in 1709 . As governor of Ancona , Stampa succeeded in liberating the city from pirates in 1714 . In 1716 he became inquisitor in Malta , without ever having held this office.

Bishop and Nuncio

After Stampa was ordained a priest on October 31, 1717 at the age of 50 , he was appointed titular archbishop of Chalcedon only two months later . He was ordained bishop on January 23, 1718 by Cardinal Ferdinando D'Adda ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Vincenzo Petra and Pietro Luigi Carafa . From 1718 to 1720 he was nuncio in Florence before going to Venice for fifteen years in the same position . On his return to Rome, Stampa became secretary of the Congregation for Bishops .

In May 1737 he finally returned to his hometown of Milan as Archbishop. After his cardinal creation on February 23, 1739, he made a triumphal entry into Milan. Many high-ranking guests were present, for example Francis II , Grand Duke of Tuscany and later Emperor Franz I, Empress Maria Theresa and the monk Lorenzo Ganganelli, who later became Pope Clement XIV. He also took part in the conclave of 1740 , which Benedict XIV . elected Pope.

Although he was already 75 years old, Carlo Gaetano Stampa died suddenly and unexpectedly. His remains are in Milan Cathedral , his heart in Pavia.
