Giuseppe Pozzobonelli (born August 11, 1696 in Milan , † April 27, 1783 ibid) was Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal .

Life

Pozzobonelli first studied in his hometown of Milan, then in Pavia and in 1722 became a doctor in civil and canon law. On December 23, 1730 he was ordained a priest in Milan and became prefect of the local clergy. In this leading role he attended numerous monasteries and seminars and earned a lasting merit with the restoration of the Ambrosius library. After the death of Archbishop Carlo Gaetano Stampa , Pozzobonelli was initially vicar of the capitol .

Pope Benedict XIV finally appointed him Archbishop of Milan. The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination on July 21, 1743. Only two months later, on September 12, he accepted him into the college of cardinals . As a cardinal priest he was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Via . After Benedict's death in 1758, Cardinal Pozzobonelli took part in the conclave to elect a successor. The new Pope Clement XIII. assigned him the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the same year . In 1769, the now 73-year-old archbishop tried to resign, but Clement XIII. refused Pozzobonelli's resignation. After Klemens' death he took part in the conclave of 1769 . In 1770 Pozzobonelli became a cardinal proto-priest and cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina . He asked again to be relieved of his duties and this time turned to the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa . He proposed the Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and later Cardinal Giovanni Archinto as his successor . But the empress did not accept the request either. For reasons of age he did not take part in the election of Pius VI from 1774-1775 . part. Cardinal Pozzobonelli died eight years later at the age of 86 and was buried in Milan Cathedral .
