The White Martyr in the Erlangen district of Büchenbach is a historical wayside shrine . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists them, together with the floor cross next to it , under monument number D-5-62-000-815.

Location

The wayside shrine and the field cross are located in the northwest of the Erlangen district of Büchenbach on Mönaustraße , opposite the junction into the street An der Weißen Marter .

description

The White Torture was made from gray and medium- coarse Rhätsandstein. The aedicula is located above the base and shaft with flat, square niches and a roof-shaped end with a ball attachment and an iron cross. The base bears the dates 1830 and 1909. However, these do not allow a reliable statement about the age of the wayside shrine, as it can also be restoration dates.

The wooden field cross next to the wayside shrine was created in 1953 by the sculptor and graphic artist Lothar Strauch (1907–1991).

history

The White Torture got its name because it is said to have been painted white during the Büchenbach parish fair. Nothing is known about the period and the reason for the erection of the wayside shrine. According to a legend , two peasant women got into an argument here and prepared themselves with a sickle in such a way that they died. In the 1890s a forest assistant from Kosbach was found shot here .

The ensemble of Marter and Feldkreuz, which used to be located away from the historic village center, is now in the middle of the new Erlangen-West development area. The original environment of the place was permanently changed by the development. In the years 2001 to 2003, several wayside shrines were renovated on the initiative of the Erlangen Local History and History Association (Kosbach Working Group) and the Kosbacher Stad'l Association, including the White Marter.
