Giacomo Oddi

Giacomo Oddi (born November 11, 1679 in Perugia ; † May 2, 1770 ibid), also called Jacopo Oddi , Oddus or degli Oddi , was an Italian clergyman, diplomat of the Holy See , bishop of Viterbo and Tuscania and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Origin and early years

He was the youngest of five children of Francesco (or Pietro) Oddi, Count of Antognolla and Vittoria Biancheri. On his mother's side, he was a nephew of Cardinal Antonio Banchieri and a cousin of Cardinal Giovanni Francesco Banchieri . He was also the uncle of Cardinal Niccolò Oddi .

Giacomo Oddi studied from 1702 to 1709 at the University of Perugia , where he received his doctorate on December 21, 1709 as Doctor utriusque iuris . He moved to Rome and served the Holy See in various governor positions and as Apostolic Protonotary .

Priest and bishop

He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1732 . He was born on June 9, 1732 to Titular Archbishop of Laodicea in Phrygia appointed and on 24 June the same year he received in the Church of the Benedictine nuns on the Campo Marzio in Rome by Cardinal Giorgio Spinola the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were Giuseppe Maria Feroni , titular archbishop of Damascus , and Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini , titular archbishop of Philippi . On June 28, 1732 Oddi became nuncio in Cologne , in 1735 nuncio in Venice and in 1739 nuncio in Portugal .

cardinal

In the consistory of September 9, 1743, Pope Benedict XIV created him cardinal priest , and the titular church of San Girolamo degli Schiavoni was assigned to him on April 5, 1745. He took the bishopric of Viterbo with the personal title of archbishop on September 22, 1749. Outside the city he built a bishop's residence, which was called La Palenzana by the following bishops . He spent large sums of money to equip the churches of the diocese with liturgical equipment , carried out visitations and emphasized the strict observance of church rites and ceremonies. On January 12, 1756 he moved to the titular church of Santa Anastasia . He took part in the conclave in 1758 , from which Clemens XIII. emerged as Pope.

In 1762 he convened a diocesan synod, which was rejected in Rome, but after an investigation by one of Pope Clement XIII. appointed commission, the action of the cardinal was found to be correct. His titular church became Santa Maria in Trastevere on November 22, 1758 , on February 12, 1759 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede and on March 21, 1763 as cardinal protopresbyter to San Lorenzo in Lucina . He could not take part in the conclave of 1769 , which Pope Clement XIV elected. On March 22, 1770, Cardinal Oddi appointed Egidio Mingarelli, a priest of the diocese of Bologna , as Vicar Apostolic of Viterbo and Toscanella because of his old age and frailty . Giacomo Oddi retired to Perugia, where he died on May 2, 1770 in his parents' house. He was buried in the Jesuit church there.
