Giuseppe Maria Feroni (born April 30, 1693 in Florence , † November 15, 1767 in Rome ; surname also passed down as Ferroni , Feronio and Feronus ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Early years

Feroni came from the wealthy aristocratic family of the Marquis of Bellavista. He was the son of Marchese Fabio Feroni and the Costanza della Stufa.

He studied first at the Collegio Clementino in Rome, in 1711 at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy there , later at the University of La Sapienza , where he received his doctorate on January 15, 1716 as Doctor iuris utriusque . On January 16, 1716 he entered the Roman prelature as a candidate for the apostolic protonotary , on January 23 of the same year he became a trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature .

Church career

The ordination received Giuseppe Maria Feroni 1719. October 22, Pope Clement XI. appointed him canon of the Lateran basilica . He was appointed titular archbishop of Damascus on May 10, 1728 . Pope Benedict XIII donated him the episcopal ordination on May 30, 1728 in the Vatican basilica ; Co-consecrators were Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese , titular archbishop of Traianopolis , and Nicola Saverio Santamaria , titular bishop of Cyrene . On June 4, 1728 Feroni became Papal Assistant to the Throne .

In the consistory of November 26, 1753 he was appointed cardinal priest and received on December 10, 1753 as the titular church of San Pancrazio . He took part in the conclave of 1758 that Pope Clement XIII. chose. From January 28, 1760 to February 16, 1761 he was Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals. After the death of Cardinal Fortunato Tamburini on August 9, 1761, Feroni became Prefect of the Congregation for Rites . On December 17, 1764 he received the titular church of Santa Cecilia . In autumn 1765 he moved to Siena , where he was Commendatabbot of the Monastery of San Galgano .

death

Giuseppe Maria Feroni died on November 15, 1767 in Rome of kidney disease . His final resting place with an elegant tomb is in his titular church Santa Cecilia in Trastevere .
