Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese (also Burghesius ; * May 20, 1697 in Rome ; † June 21, 1759 ibid) was a Roman Catholic bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church.

Life

He was born the sixth of nine children of the Viceroy of Naples Marcantonio Borghese and his wife Livia (or Flaminia) Spinola from the house of the Princes of Sant'Angelo. His brother Giacomo later married a cousin of Cardinal Niccolò Coscia .

Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese studied at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in theology on October 5, 1717 ; Furthermore, he was on April 1 in 1721 Doctor iuris utriusque doctorate . One of his academic teachers was the well-known Dominican Father Ignatius Hyacinthus Amat de Graveson . Benedict XIII. elevated him to cardinal priest on July 6, 1729 ; he received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of San Pietro in Montorio on August 3 of the same year. Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese took part in the 1730 conclave that Pope Clement XII. chose. On March 31, 1732 he moved to the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite . From January 27, 1738 to 1739 he was treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals . He was a participant in the 1740 conclave , from which Benedict XIV emerged as pope, and was appointed protector of Germany by Emperor Charles VII in July 1742. On May 20, 1743 he moved to the titular church of Santa Maria in Trastevere and on September 25, 1752 was cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . In Albano Laziale he had a palace built, which he later donated to the diocese . He was among the electoral cardinals when Pope Clement XIII at the 1758 conclave . was chosen. On February 12, 1759 he moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Porto e Santa Rufina and became cardinal subdean .

Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese died on June 21, 1759 at around four in the afternoon in Rome and was buried in a side chapel of the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .

His nephew Scipione Borghese was also elevated to cardinal in 1770.
