Scipione Borghese (born April 1, 1734 in Rome , † December 26, 1782 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Scipione Borghese came from the Roman noble family of the Borghese , which had already produced numerous cardinals. His uncle was the Cardinal Francesco Scipione Maria Borghese , another family member was the Cardinal Camillo Borghese, who became Pope as Paul V. Since a career in the church was planned for him, he studied theology at the Collegio Tolomei in Siena and then at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, where he received his doctorate as Doctor iuris utriusque .

On September 22, 1759 he received the sacrament of ordination and on July 5, 1765 he was appointed titular archbishop of Teodosia . He was ordained bishop on June 9, 1765 by Cardinal Marcantonio Colonna ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia, Domenico Giordani and Giovanni Lercari . He was one of the closest collaborators of Pope Clement XIII. in the last years of his pontificate and tried to defend the Jesuits . However, he quickly changed this position under the pontificate of Clement XIV , who finally dissolved the Society of Jesus in 1773.

Elevated cardinal by Pope Clement XIV on September 10, 1770 , the Pope appointed him cardinal priest of Santa Maria sopra Minerva on December 12 of the same year . He took part in the conclave of 1774/1775 , which Giovanni Angelo Braschi as Pope Pius VI. chose. He was from March 1, 1779 to March 20, 1780 Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals .
